Boteh is a jacquard woven and hand-beaded ornamental article of a teardrop-shaped motif with a curved upper end. The word Boteh is derived from the Persian word ‘Buta’, which means shrub or bush. Of Persian origin, the word Boteh is synonymous with ornamental textile design from the Mughal Empire also known as the Paisley design. One of the earliest pieces of evidence of this pattern was found at the Noh Gumba mosque, in the city of Balkh in Afghanistan; and in the early Iranian culture, the design was woven into Termeh to make clothing for the nobility.
